What Are Orthobiologics and PRP?

Orthobiologics are biological substances used in orthopedic care to support the body's healing response. They may include blood components, cells, tissues, and growth factors and can be used as part of nonsurgical treatment or in conjunction with surgery.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is prepared from a patient's own blood. The blood is processed to concentrate platelets and other components that may play a role in healing and inflammation. PRP may be injected into an area of injury as an outpatient treatment.

Dr. Hergan also offers Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC). BMAC is obtained from bone marrow and contains cells and growth factors that may support tissue healing. Other orthobiologic treatments offered through the practice include cartilage transplantation and biologic scaffolds.

Orthobiologic treatment is not appropriate for every patient or every condition. Dr. Hergan can determine whether PRP, BMAC, or another treatment is appropriate based on your diagnosis, symptoms, and previous treatment.
