David J. Hergan, MD, MS

About Dr. David J. Hergan

Dr. Hergan earned his medical degree at The Chicago Medical School where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha- the prestigious national honor medical society. He completed an orthopedic residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he was elected by his peers and mentors as the Chief Orthopaedic resident. He did a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at New York University/Hospital for Joint Diseases, researching and mastering techniques for arthroscopic surgical procedures of the shoulder, hip and knee.

Dr. Hergan is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has a specialty board certification in orthopedic sports medicine. He has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor annually since 2022. He has held the role of Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Middlesex Hospital , and is the Director of the Joint Replacement Program and Director of Quality Improvement for Orthopedics at Middlesex Hospital. Dr. Hergan has served as an orthopedic team physician for Wesleyan University since 2010.

He performs minimally invasive procedures for the shoulder, hip and knee including rotator cuff repairs, ACL reconstructions, meniscus surgeries, arthroscopic repairs of the hip labrum, direct anterior hip replacements, partial and total knee replacements using robotic technology where appropriate and total shoulder replacements.

Dr. Hergan is a leader in the field of Orthobiologics and Regenerative Medicine using both Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) injections in the office and operating room setting. He is also proficient in cartilage transplantation techniques and the use of biologic scaffolds to enhance healing.

Dr. Hergan has been the Chief Medical Officer of Middlesex Orthopedic & Spine Associates since 2024 and became the Chief Medical Officer of Spire Orthopedic Partners in 2025.
